My Last Blog...I Found My Forever Home

I found my forever home...just in time for the new year! I love my new family and they love me! I have a wonderful new mom and dad, and two human sisters! I also have 2 cat siblings, which I'm still learning about. Everyone kept telling me that having a family of my own would be great, and they were right! Thanks to all who helped me find my forever family! Love, Luke

My New Foster Home

Hey everyone. I moved into a new foster home over the weekend and it's been very exciting. I got a new name, Luke, that I think suits me better and I'm already starting to learn it. There was also a big snow storm on Saturday, so on Sunday we spent lots of time playing in the snow. I like to eat the snow! I also like to try and catch snowballs.

My new foster mom says that I am a great dog and will transition very easily into a new home. I'm pretty mellow for a GSP, although I do enjoy running, playing (I love toys!), and going for walks. I also don't need much training either! So far, I showed my foster mom that I know sit, down, come, stay, no, and shake. She said she's going to start teaching me just a few more commands. I also enjoy my crate, which I hear is a great thing. I don't mind going in and once I get comfy, I just go to sleep. The one bad habit I have is that I really LOVE food. Sometimes if I smell something yummy on the counter, I try to get it. I'm tall enough that I don't even have to jump up, so why not? But I'm learning that's not okay.

In my new foster home, I have 2 GSP sisters and a Rottweiler brother. We are still working things out, but I think in a few days we will all get along. My foster mom says it's more their fault then mine. They know I'm new here and want to make sure I know who's boss. I'm okay with that and haven't been aggressive towards them at all. I even let the puppy take my toys.

I also enjoy laying with my people. If you are looking for a trained and well-behaved, sweet boy...I'm your man!

Surgery Update

Finally I got that big cone off my head. What a RELIEF - I think my foster mom is even more happy than me. Doesn't my eye look so much better?! It feels so much better too. Since Christmas is just around the corner and Sandy is going away, I'm headed off to a new foster home just in time for the snow. I hear even though the white stuff is really cold, it's so much fun for a guy like me to play in and EAT - you know I love to eat EVERYTHING. I can hardly wait to meet my new foster family so I'll check back after I'm settled into my new digs....

My Surgery Update

I made it through my eye surgery, and I'm back in my foster home. Everything went well except for the huge thing on my head. I guess it's not staying on forever, but while I have to wear it, I'm making sure Sandy, my foster mom, knows just how much I hate it - I ram into her with it every chance I get!!! Honestly though, I am getting more used to it just like the nice vet said I would - I eat with it, can go in my crate with it and can even play with it - but it's still fun to torment Sandy!

They checked me out while I was there and I'm a healthy guy. Sandy was worried about my rear right leg and also a sound I sometimes make when I eat - Lori, my foster aunt, likes to call me Wilbur because she says I sound like a pig - she's really NOT that funny...

Anyhow, everything is good. My right rear leg is a bit weaker than my left, but it's from an old injury and there is nothing surgery can do to help. Luckily I LOVE walks, because I overheard the doctor say the best thing we can do is build up my muscle - WOOHOOO, sounds like I'm going to be a walking machine. The sound I make (the one Lori makes fun of me for), it's just that I have an elongated soft palate. It's not a big deal and other dogs have it too. Laser surgery can be done to reduce the size, but it's unnecessary - so I make a little noise when I eat, who cares???!!!

I'm glad to be back in my foster home and I'll be even happier when my stitches come out and I can get this big thing off my head. Thank you for everyone's well wishes - they worked! I'm all ready for my own family now - MY wish is to get them before the holiday!

I'm in Foster Care!

Well I was right. Over a week ago the family who was visiting me came to the kennel where I was, gave me a bath - thank goodness because I was REALLY stinky - and took me home. They weren't sure if I was contagious or not, even though I knew I was fine, so they kept me separate from their dogs in a different part of their house. I didn't care. I'm just happy to be in a cozy place with some really nice people.

No rest for the weary here. Sandy, my foster mom, got me right into a routine. We are up at 5am, walk about 3 miles, have breakfast and then another short walk and back in the crate I go until when they come back home after a while. Then it's another mile walk, dinner and then a few more short walks before bed. On the walks, I love when I see other animals - squirrels, rabbits and deer - I'm very interested. I'm also interested in everyone's business. My foster mom tells me it's not polite to stare, but I want to meet everyone I see. Oh yeah, I also LOVE to pick up ANYTHING I think might be a treat. Sandy doesn't like this and she always catches me and makes sure I don't eat it. I try to be sneaky, but it never works. I get her back though because usually when she takes it out of my mouth, her hands gets all yucky - if she'd just let me eat it we'd both be happier!

I went to the vet and I'm not contagious - just as I thought. I do have this cyst on my eye that is annoying so I'm going to the vet in another day for a surgery. My foster mom said not to worry, but I am. If everyone could think about me on Wednesday, 12/9, I'm sure it will help.

Since I'm healthy, I got to meet my foster brother (a GSP like me) and sister (a Lab). I still sleep and rest in my own place, but when everyone's home, I'm with them all. They make me wear a leash just to be sure I behave, but they are surprised at how smart I am. I know sit, no, off and I'm learning down. I don't jump. I love the toy box and all the toys. The noisy ones are my favorite. I'm very curious about everything in the house and I'm interested in learning how to cook - or at least that's my story - but they don't want me in the kitchen. They think there are more important things for me to learn besides cooking...

That's it for now. I'll check in soon and let everyone know how I'm doing.

Allow me to Introduce Myself

Hi! Im Dougie......

I’m the new boy in town or at least with this rescue group. I’ve been here a couple weeks already, but since I have a small cough and am kind of snotty, they are keeping me all alone. It’s very boring, but I’m not complaining.

I’ve been all vetted and now I’m boarded until I’m feeling better. There’s a foster home lined up to take me in. I’m not sure what a “foster” home is, but anything with the word “home” has got to be good. I’m ready for a change of scenery.

While I’m in a kennel, people do come to visit me. I think they are from this rescue group. I think one might even be my next foster mom – she’s not saying anything, but she visits a lot and even brought a guy and some teenagers to meet me too.

I’m a big guy at 68 lbs, but I’m in good shape and I’m strong. I have a big head and a thick neck and boy do I love walks… I can’t wait to explore and go on an adventure, so I pull a lot. That’s something we are going to work on.

I know “SIT”, “GET YOUR TOY” and some other stuff, but in the kennel, it’s hard for me to show off all my training and tricks. I did make sure everyone who visits knows how much I love treats and also that I’m a playful guy.

As soon as I get out of this kennel and get into a “home”, I’ll send another update with lots more news!
